Acupuncture: The New Anti-Aging Regimen

(From my article posted on Your Health Magazine April 2019 Edition)

It goes by many names: cosmetic acupuncture, natural face-lift, the Botox alternative, etc. Whatever you call it, acupuncture can be used for natural and effective facial rejuvenation. Studies have shown that it can help to erase as many as 5-15 years from the face and neck, with results appearing after just a few treatments.

Fine lines and wrinkles diminished or even eliminated. Bags under the eyes are no longer a problem. There can also be a firming of the cheeks and chin, a more even complexion, decreased puffiness, smaller pores, reduction in pigmentation and broken capillaries, and brighter eyes. The results of cosmetic acupuncture include younger looking, rejuvenated skin and a stronger, better functioning body.

How does this work? As with regular acupuncture sessions, tiny needles are inserted at different points on the body to start an internal biophysiological response. With cosmetic acupuncture, needles are inserted into points both along the body as well as superficially into the face and neck. The insertion of these needles causes the body’s repair system to kick in. Blood and lymphatic circulation increase, allowing oxygen-filled cells, nutrients and various chemicals and hormones to be brought to the area of “concern.” In particular, the needles can help to bring fibroblasts to the area; fibroblasts are the precursors to collagen.

Collagen is one of the major building blocks of skin tissue, which often decreases with age and trauma (think sun damage and harsh chemicals). The softening of wrinkles, lifting of facial muscles and evening of complexion, as mentioned above, result.

Cosmetic acupuncture is a great treatment for anyone who is concerned with looking and feeling younger. Not only do these treatments result in fresher, more renewed looking skin but they help to strengthen the functioning of our body as well.

It influences both our external appearance and the internal health of our body. For example, while some needles may be used due to their proximity to a muscle insertion on the face, the point may also be able to help with digestion.

By having an impact on our internal health, cosmetic acupuncture can help with long-lasting skin renewal and improvement in appearance. That acupuncture has been around for almost 5,000 years – including for the treatment of physical appearance – is a testament to its effectiveness. That is does not involve chemicals or invasive procedures makes it a safer and more natural alternative to some other facial rejuvenation treatments.
